In her lecture, urban researcher Dr Noa K. Ha explores Berlin and its old and new border-making processes. Her approach is guided by the idea that hope emerges through the democratic practice of belonging. In conversation with Muna Abdi and Hassan Nugud, both members of the “Welcome United Kollektiv” and advocates, among other things, for the right to freedom of movement, the discussion will bring together Berlin’s urban history with the struggles and self-organisation of refugees. Together, they will explore how the city can be understood as a practice of porous borders. The discussion will be moderated by Christian Jakob. The event will be held in English with simultaneous interpretation into German. ## Get to know the contributors ### Dr Noa K. Ha Dr Noa K. Ha is an urban, migration and racism researcher and serves as Academic Managing Director of the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM). As an urban researcher, she most recently taught at the Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin. Previously, she conducted research at the Centre for Metropolitan Studies (CMS) at the Technical University of Berlin. She is a member of numerous urban advisory boards and advises research projects in the fields of postcolonial memory work and commemoration policy, integration research, anti-racism, and the history of migration in eastern Germany. ### Muna Abdi Muna Abdi comes from Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, where she studied journalism, mass communication and public administration. She worked for various local and international media outlets before arriving in Germany as an asylum seeker in 2024. Since then, she has continued to use her journalistic skills in different contexts. In 2025, among other projects, she wrote a diary documenting the “Caravan for Freedom of Movement”, an initiative organised by the anti-racist network “We’ll Come United”. ### Hassan Nugud Hassan Nugud is originally from Sudan and has lived in Berlin since 2015. He works as a social worker and project coordinator in an independent counselling service for refugees with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. In addition, he is actively involved in civil society organisations, including the network “We’ll Come United”, “Sudan Club e.V.”, the board of “Handwerker für Darfur”, and “Sudan Uprising Germany”. He is also a board member of the Berlin Refugee Council. ### Christian Jakob Christian Jakob is a journalist and has been writing for the German daily newspaper “taz” for the past 20 years. He also publishes with Ch. Links Verlag, where his most recent book, “Endzeit. Die neue Angst vor dem Untergang und der Kampf um unsere Zukunft”, appeared in 2023. Since 2019, he has co-edited the “Atlas of Migration” for the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. He previously published “Die Bleibenden”, a history of the refugee movement in Germany. Jakob is also the author of radio features for SWR, Deutschlandfunk and ORF, and serves on the advisory board of Mediendienst Integration.
