Today, the Museumsdorf Düppel stands on this historic site. Across an area the size of ten football pitches, you can explore reconstructed houses, storehouses and workshops. There are also gardens and fields – right in Berlin’s green outskirts. Since 1995, the open-air museum has been part of the Berlin Museum and invites you to explore life in the Middle Ages for yourself. Thanks to the voluntary work of the members of the Förderverein Museumsdorf Düppel e. V. (Friends of the Düppel Museum Village), you can experience the Middle Ages up close here at weekends. On all opening days, historical children’s games await you, and in the afternoon, children and adults can have a go at archery. Five shots cost 1 euro. There’s also crispy bread baked over an open fire, except during the school holidays. Good to know: dogs are welcome everywhere in our open-air museum, provided they’re kept on a lead! ##### Visitor notice The **caterpillars of the oak processionary moth** have once again infested many of Berlin’s green spaces this year. The **oak trees in the open-air museum** are also affected. Please note that **the caterpillars' irritating hairs** can be carried by the wind, so **contact with them is possible anywhere on the museum grounds**. The houses, the village square and the gardens give you an impression of what life in the countryside was like back then. At weekends during the season, the Förderverein Museumsdorf Düppel e. V. looks after the village: its members build, maintain and bring everything to life. Thanks to the voluntary commitment of the members of the Förderverein Museumsdorf Düppel e. V., the Middle Ages can be experienced up close here at weekends. Food is cooked in the houses, wood is carved and wool is made into clothing. Medieval crafts are also demonstrated, such as blacksmithing, pottery and bronze casting. Thanks to the Grunewald Foundation, in 2023 it was also possible to set up a ropery. ##### Förderverein Museumsdorf Düppel e.V. **About** The aim of the association, founded in 1975, is to recreate historically accurate medieval life as it might have looked around 1200 at the present location of the museum. **Living History** The association is divided into various working groups that deal with the maintenance of the reconstructed dwellings in the museum villlage, crafts and garb, and agriculture in the Middle Ages. This breed of sheep is now threatened with extinction. With the Düppel pasture pig, we are even bringing back a breed that had previously become extinct. All the animals are reared organically. They form an integral part of our landscape concept, which is geared towards diversity. After all, treating nature sustainably is an integral part of what we do. ### Touch it? Try it out? Yes, but... The grounds are accessible without steps. The entrance has a visually contrasting design and glare-free lighting, the lighting in the permanent exhibition is dimmed. The cash desk and the exhibition are accessible without steps via a 90 cm long ramp with a 10 % incline. The cash desk is 75 cm high at its lowest point. Information about the exhibition and the objects is predominantly visible while seated, and the signage is high-contrast. The rooms and exhibits are well lit and glare-free. Seating is available in the exhibition. Information on the exhibits and objects is mainly provided in writing. The narrowest passage is the exit at the end of the exhibition room. However, it is also possible to leave the exhibition through the entrance via the ramp. The main paths in the grounds are 2 m wide and mostly easy to walk and drive on. The side paths in the grounds are mostly about 1 m wide and more difficult to walk and drive on. In the area of the village square, the ground surface is softer. Some replica houses are only accessible via narrow paths (50-60 cm wide) and steps. Some of the houses can be accessed via wooden planks and larger thresholds or steps (entrances sometimes less than 70 cm wide). Barrier-free toilets are available in the entrance area of the open-air site, equipped with fold-up grab handles, door does not open automatically (door 80 cm wide, movement area in front of the toilet and washbasin 170 x 150 cm, to the left of the toilet 78 x 72 cm, to the right of the toilet 88 x 72 cm, washbasin with limited accessibility). Non-barrier-free eco-toilets accessible via a step are available near the village square (door 84 cm wide). Outdoor catering is available on the grounds. ### Offerings Audio stations are available in the exhibition. Additional audio content can be accessed via QR codes in the grounds.
